The Powder Highway is not a place, it is a road: it links the mountains of interior British Columbia one after another, and you travel it the way you travel a road trip, sleeping where you finished riding.
Over ten days you go from Kicking Horse to Revelstoke, from Whitewater to Red Mountain and on to Fernie. Five mountains with five different characters, not five versions of the same one: the terrain changes every time the town changes, and in between there are Nelson and Rossland, where the riding community never left.
Small group, one van, a guide who has already driven this road. Ten days, five mountains and a van: you sleep where you finished riding and set off again the next morning.
One-stop flight from Europe to Calgary. Pick up the van and head west: two and a half hours through the Rockies to Golden, where we spend the night.
It is an approach leg, and it keeps you from starting the trip with five hours of driving on top of a long-haul flight.
Kicking Horse sits fourteen kilometres out of Golden. The Golden Eagle Express gondola climbs 1,128 metres in a single ride, the longest lift-served rise in North America, and from up there you drop into the bowls or into the eighty-odd chutes coming off the ridge.
Once the lifts close we move on: two hours of Trans-Canada through Glacier National Park to Revelstoke.
The highest lift-served vertical in North America, 1,713 metres. A full day on one mountain, which is the minimum it takes to start reading it.
Second night in Revelstoke.
Three and a half hours along the lakes to Nelson, a mountain town whose riding community never left.
Free afternoon: hot springs for some, downtown for others.
Whitewater is twenty minutes from Nelson, has four chairlifts in total and gets a lot of snow. Tree runs, pillow lines, no queues and none of the big-resort machinery.
This is where the locals ride.
A second day at Whitewater, to use what you learned the day before: by now you know where to look.
Late afternoon, an hour of road to Rossland.
Red Mountain is old, steep and barely tamed. Granite can be ridden on all four sides, which almost no mountain allows: you drop off the summit in a different direction every lap and still end up at the same chair.
Tree chutes, and one of the oldest resorts in Canada.
Four hours east to Fernie, properly inside the Rocky Mountains. The road cuts through the Kootenays.
Five bowls in a row, Siberia, Timber, Currie, Lizard and Cedar, each with its own aspect: you build the day by moving between them depending on where the snow held best.
Last riding day of the trip.
Three hours from Fernie to Calgary and the flight home.
