Spoiler: it’s not. And here’s why.
Over the past few days, your feed and Google searches have probably been full of this stuff:
“Ski pass +30%!”
“Tax-free shopping gone!”
“Starting in 2026, you’ll need a visa!”
And the same fear-based message, over and over again:
“Book now or miss your last chance to ride in Japan!”
Let’s stop the panic for a second.
Because we’ve been there. And we know the truth.
No fear. No FOMO. Just facts.

What’s really happening in Japan?
Prices are going up (but that’s nothing new)
In high-demand areas like Niseko, the cost of lodging, food and ski passes is rising. Fair enough—when demand explodes, so do prices.
Kyodo News reports a +10% increase in prices on average in the area.

Dual pricing for ski passes starts in 2025
From July 2025, some ski resorts will introduce different rates for locals and tourists:
~ ¥6,500 for foreign visitors, ~ ¥5,000 for Japanese residents.

Tax-free shopping will change (from 2026)
As of November 2026, Japan will stop offering instant tax-free shopping.
VAT refunds will be processed after your purchase, usually at departure.

A new pre-entry form (JESTA) is coming
Japan is developing a digital system like the US ESTA, to simplify border control.
It’s not a visa, just a pre-registration process planned between 2025 and 2028.
What about all the other rumors?
There’s also a wave of clickbait claiming things like:
– “From 2026, foreigners will be banned from top ski resorts”
– “You’ll need a special visa to enter Japan”
– “You won’t be able to shop without a digital ID”
None of these have been confirmed.
They’re just speculation and marketing panic.

So… is Japan shutting down in 2026? No.
Japan isn’t shutting down.
It’s just evolving to manage tourism more efficiently.
The snow is still out there. Deep, silent, mind-blowing.
And if you know where to look, you’ll still find places that are pure, quiet, and untouched.
